Benefits of the project in the proposed areas included the following:

o Expansion of the existing sub transmission and distribution network capacity to meet growing demands,
o Improved system reliability in wheeling power from all sectors of the sub-transmission network
o Improved customer end voltages
o Improved system reliability.
 

Products and services supplied

BES was awarded a total of three contracts by NPA, the first to supply and install a new Revenue Management System (RMS), the second to supply 25,000 single phase and three phase prepaid meters, and the third to supply and install a new prepaid vending system.  

Results 

Supply and Installation of three sets of components was successfully completed on time and within budget, and has resulted in significant improvements to the total revenues collected by the Authority. There has been a considerable demand for the prepaid meters from the public, and very high approval rating for the ease and efficiency of the vending process.

As a result of this initial success, contracts for further roll-out of prepaid meters and additions to the capacity of the RMS have been awarded to BES. BES continues to provide training and support through  service level agreements.

Transmission Line:

The works included the decommissioning of the existing 161kV power line, the complete design of the new line, demolition of the old line, construction of new foundations, erection of towers, installation of fittings, stringing of conductor and OPGW shield wire and their termination at the Prestea and Bogoso Substations.

Substation:

The 34.5kV obsolete indoor switchgear was decommissioned and replaced with a new 34.5kV metal clad air insulated switchgear; two sets of three-phase 161kV pantograph disconnector switches were decommissioned and replaced by new ones and an emergency 50kVA diesel generator set was supplied and installed. BES also designed, supplied and installed a new mosaic MIMIC control and metering panel board and an annunciator panel to control the entire 161/34.5kV substation. All the installed equipment was commissioned by BES.  

The work required careful planning as there were strict limits to power outages due to the fact that the existing line and substations were the main supply to large gold mines in the area. To that effect the supply was re-routed through the temporary construction of a loop-in loop-out solution for the transmission line and of a by-pass for the substation. 

BES arranged the finance for the project through its UK bankers with support from the Export Credit Agency of the UK Government.

Results

The project was completed on time and within budget and the power outages were kept to a minimum as the customer required.

The projects involved the construction of 30kV and 15 kV transmission & distribution lines on steel towers and wood poles.  The terrain was particularly challenging, with the project teams having to overcome mountains and rocky environments in remote areas, often having to transport materials to site by hand.

Results

Despite these problems, the projects were finished on time and within budget.  Numerous centres were connected, thus receiving electricity for the first time.  BES Group has subsequently been awarded further similar projects in Rwanda

Products & services supplied

BES Group designed the new substation in close cooperation with the engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana.  The substation includes 2 x 20/26MVA ONAN/ONAF Transformers, 33kV outdoor switchgear, 33kV indoor switchgear, SCADA communication control system and ancillary equipment.

The site became operational in 2008.

Results

The investment resolved the overloading problem in this particular area of Accra and the site allows scope for increasing the number of bays.

In total, there were 11 separate projects, comprising a mixture of either 33kV or 11kV line and low voltage work. The projects connected local communities to the Grid, with many schools and medical centres receiving power for the first time. There was a great deal of heavy bush clearing in the initial stages, to clear the routes for the planting of 11, 12, 14 and 16 metre wood poles. Several rivers were spanned, with a real pressure to complete the work before the onset of the rains, which would have made several rivers and roads impassable. Stringing of the lines was completed, together with the erection of transformer H-pole structures and ground mounted transformers

Results

The projects were all completed within the required timescale and within budget, and were officially handed over to REA in July and August 2008.  As a direct result of the success of these projects, REA Zambia is repeating this blueprint for Rural Electrification projects across Zambia and BES Group has been awarded numerous subsequent projects.

Materials successfully delivered included Rock Bits, Drill Pipe, Drilling Mud, Cement Additives and Lubricants, Master Valves, and a wide variety of equipment and spare parts required in the drilling process.

All products supplied were sourced from BES Group's worldwide supply network of market leaders, and given full warranty.

Results

BES Group were able to supply exceptionally well-priced products, from reputable manufacturers, within very tight delivery schedules. We coordinated all of the ordering, packing, delivery to port, and shipping, as well as the liaison between inspection agencies, manufacturers and shipping lines.  We also conducted numerous factory visits throughout production, to check the quality of the goods prior to despatch.

As a result of our efforts, all materials were delivered seamlessly to the customer, in perfect order and within the desired timeframe.

BES Group designed the power supply using 4 x 2500 kVA Paxman VP185 11kV generators.  BES Group also designed the bulk fuel tanks, suitable switchgear and the operating system. 

The generators were then fully installed and commissioned by BES Group into the customer’s existing building.

Results

The client benefited from a solution fully tailored to meet their standby power generation requirements and by working with one supplier from design and supply to installation and commissioning.  BES Group has subsequently designed, supplied and installed 4 mini power plants at different sites for this client.

Products & services supplied

BES Group designed, supplied and installed a battery of cooling fans to each transformer. 

The cooling fan system was designed with an automatic temperature control panel to automatically monitor the temperature and switch on/off the cooling fans, when required. 

BES Group upgraded more than 50 transformers over a period of 12 months.

Results

The client benefited from a significantly reduced number of electrical outages and as a result saved substantial revenue losses.  Transformer performance was improved overall by 25%.
